Fold the cover in half sideways and make the above messenger eye.Īnother way is to cut the core about 50cm from the end, and do the back-splice on the cover so the end of the core meets the end of the cover inside the cover to make an eye that you can seize to make the messenger eye. Pull the cover over the core and use a hot knife to trim the end about 5cm from the end of the core. Now milk back the cover on the end and cut off as much of the core as possible. If wanting to make a better taper in the end of the line to pass through blocks, make a seizing over the bitter end about 20cm from the end. If you just made 3 passes of the messenger loop and didn't "braid" them, then the messenger eye would turn into a twisted loop, and be a pain in the arse to use. Now you have a messenger loop that is reasonably strong. Now make a good seizing over the end to bury the line portion of the messenger eye. If you do unballance the eye, just pull a bit on the eye to even it out. Where the needle exits the line after burying the 3rd pass, put a tiny seazing where it exits so when you make the whipping that it doesn't pull/unballance the messengery eye. The third pass of the messenger eye will now rotate opposite to the right around both the 1st & 2nd messenger loops, and sometimes pass in between them to make the three passes look like a braid. The second pass of the messenger eye goes through the same "hole" the first needle passed through, and will rotate left around the first messenger loop, making about 10 passes. Step three - bring the two ends together and finish with a reef knot.īefore the actual whipping, I pass the needle through the middle area of where the whipping will be, and make the first pass of the messenger eye. Step two - take one part up and around the turns. Wrap at least two or three turns with both parts of the twine. Wrap the twine as shown in step one of the mousing diagram below. If a large hook is used, more twine will be required. Step one - take a piece of twine about 45 cm long. Using the mousing to increase the strength of a hook is not recommended as it overloads the hook and may create a dangerous situation. Prevent a strop from jerking out of the hook. Prevent a hook from unhooking from the strop. When using a tackle hook it is sometimes necessary to mouse (pronounced mouze) the hook. The most common type of hook is called a tackle hook. Having learned how to sling and rig tackles we now focus on the hook. I usually use "mousing" to describe a way to close a hook as shown: If you mean adding a small loop to attach a leader line for rigging the halyard, then what BowM said above.
